Farm Receipts Up
In Rappahannock
As a whole, Rappahannock County farmers closed the past year in better financial shape than fanners in most parts of the country.
Despite a downturn in prices of farm products and livestock, many of them succeeded in boosting their gross receipts above the previous year’s level. The better showing was due, in part, to favorable weather conditions, bigger plantings and heavier fertilization. Improved operating efficiency, made possible by the use of more mechanical equipment, was also a factor.
In contrast to the results reported for the local area, farmers and ranchers in many parts of the nation were able to show little or no improvement.
The findings are based upon a survey conducted by the Standard Rate and Data Service. It gives figures on gross farm income and farm population for each county in the United States.
In Rappahannock County, it shows, farm receipts in the year totaled $4,325,000.
That was the gross amount, before taking operating costs and taxes into account.
The bulk of it consisted of cash receipts from the sale of crops and livestock. The rest was made up of government payments and “income in kind,” which is the value of the homegrown products consumed on the farm.
A breakdown of the cash receipts from the sale of commodities, on the basis of data compiled by the Dcjarirrvnl <<f Agriculture, shows that approximately 48 percent of it was from the marketing of farm crops and the remaining 52 percent from livestock, poultry and dairy products.
In terms of the number of men, women and children living on farms in Rappahannock County, the gross income was equivalent to $4,330 per capita.
It compares favorably with the $2,895 per capita averaged on farms elsewhere in the South Atlantic States and with the $2,009 in the State of Virginia.
To arrive at the net income, however, the cost of feed grains’, fertilizer, farm labor, equipment, fuel and the many other items of expense, all of which rose in the year, had to be deducted.
Only a marked upturn in the price of farm commodities and a halt to the inflationary spiral will bring the financial relief that is needed, says the farm community.
Compete at State Fair
Ann Baumgardner and Mary Lib Snead will leave Friday for Richmond where they will enter the 4-H Club Horse Show at the Virginia State Fair. Mary Lib will enter the large pony Hunter Division and Ann will show in the imall pony Hunter Division. They will be accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Baumgardner and Mrs. Rayner V. Snead.
