In June 1968, John heard that there had been a change made recently in the social security law that lowered the amount of work required to qualify for disability benefits if the person became disabled before age 31. He phoned his social security office and found that with two years of work to his credit, he, his wife and child could receive monthly benefits, beginning with February 1968. This was possible because of the 1967 amendments which contained a provision that a person who becomes disabled between age 24 and 31 needs to have worked under social security for only half the time between age 21 and the time he became disabled. In John’s case this was two years.
Persons who became disabled before age 24 need to have worked under social security only one and a half years out of the three-year period immediately before they became disabled.
