The Rappahannock Panthers scored one run in the first inning and added three in the fourth and three in the fifth to surprise Broadway 7-5 in the season opener for both teams Tuesday at Rappahannock.
Stewart Henry went the full route for the Panthers, allowing seven hits, walking seven and fanning three. Bill Showalter started for the Gobblers but needed relief help from Jim Golden and Bemie Hollred. Henry was the winner while Golden was charged with the loss.
Broadway scored three in the top of the first to take a quick lead, and Rappahannock tallied once in their half of the frame. The Gobblers made it 4-1 with a run in the second before the Panthers knotted the score with three in the fourth.
Broadway went ahead again 5-4 with a run in the top of the fifth, but Rappahannock refused to fall and scored three times in their half of the fifth to ice the game.
Maury Nichols led the Panthers’ attack with three hits in four trips to the plate, including two doubles. First baseman Wayne Deal also contributed two hits and Steve Dement and Henry had one each. Dale Welch also played an impressive game
