Virginia’s trout fishing season opens at 12 o’clock noon this Saturday, April 5th. About 5000 trout have been stocked in Rappahannock County streams. Fish averaging 11 to 12 inches and up to 15 or 16 inches have been stocked in the North Fork Thornton, Piney Branch, the Rush and Hughes Rivers. Most of these are Rainbows with about a third of the total being Brooks. They were all stocked before last weeks rain and should be well scattered.
Regulations are the same as in the past on these streams. 12 noon starting time, any type of bait is legal, attached to a single hook, on a single line. Treble hooks are legal only if they are part of a manufactured lure, such as a spinner. The daily limit is 8 with no size limit. It is illegal to fish in trout stocked waters after obtaining the daily creel limit.
In neighboring Madison County the Rose, Robinson and Hughes Rivers and Garth Run have been stocked and are subject to the same regulations as Rappahannock County streams. These streams were also stocked with Rainbow and Brooks. A few anglers will probably pick up a Brown or two on the Hughes and N. F. Thornton left over from last Fall’s stocking.
For those who like to land lunker trout but aren’t particularly interested in fish for the pan, the Rapidan Fish-for-Fun area should be the answer. A load of Rainbows has just been put out on this beautiful stream and they were really nice fish. Regulations on the Fish-for-Fun area include artificial lures only with barbless hooks. All fish must be immediately returned to the water. No fish at all may be in possession while in the area. The area stocked is within the Game Commission owned land. The section of the Rapidan below the Game Commission and before reaching the Park boundary may jalso be fished. Fish-for-Fun regulations still apply to this section as well as to the tributaries to the Rapidan within
