Local Supt Attends

Welfare Meeting

I The Virginia League of Welfare Executives, whose membership is composed of all superintendents of welfare in Virginia, held its semi-annual meeting on October 27th and 28th at Natural Bridge. Mrs. Elizabeth Buntin, the local superintendent, attended the luncheon and dinner banquets on the 28th. Keynote speakers at the luncheon were Mr. Arvid E. Dopson, Assistant Director, Southeast Region, Food and Nutrition Service, U. S. Department of Agriculture, and Mr. Hicks Elmore, Supervisor, Food Stamp Program, Southeastern Region, U. S. Department of Agriculture. Mr. Dopson spoke on changes in the Food Stamp program now before Congress and Mr. Elmore spoke on how these changes will affect the program in Virginia.

The principal speaker at the dinner banquet was Mr. Jule Berman, Chief, Division of Program Payment Standards, Social and Rehabilitation Service of HEW. After being introduced by Mr. Otis Brown, Director of the Virginia Department of Welfare and Institutions, Mr. Berman presented President Nixon’s proposed changes to the public welfare program, how these changes will affect the local departments of welfare, and what is in the future for public welfare.

League members also listened to four major projects presented by the local departments of Arlington County, City of Harrisonburg, City of Norfolk, and Nelson County.
