Musk and Curled thistles are just ripe for spraying. They are in a lush stage of growth. The main stalk of the second year plants are just starting to elongate and a healthy dose of 2,4-D right now would curl them up in permanent sleep. Two weeks from now they will be harder to kill. And by the time they are in full bloom it’s practically impossible to get a good kill without the thistles still going to seed. Please make no mistake about it. Musk and Curled thistles are not the same old common thistle that you were grubbing up when you were a boy. They are a relative new comer to the state and have just crossed over to the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge in the past few years. This summer there will be many a permanent pasture field .in Warren, Shenandoah and Clarke Countiest. where the cattle carrying capacity will be reduced "by as much as 50% because of thistle infestations. Why let it happen in Rappahannock?

It always seems to me that flea beetles and potato bugs must grow out of the ground with the first new greens and potato shoots. Sevin will still do a good job of controlling these pests.
