Game Facts
Turkey Season Opens The Spring turkey season for Rappahannock and adjoining counties will open this Saturday, April 17. Only bearded turkeys may be taken and hunting is allowed from one-half hour before sunrise until 11 a.m. Getting out of the wood no later than 11 is important to future turkey broods. Hens will be in the process of nest building and laying and should be disturbed as little as possible. No dogs are allowed for this same reason. When Tom quits gobbling, which is usually well before 11 o’clock, it’s about all over for the day and you’ll be doing the turkeys and yourself a favor by clearing out. The season ends May 8.
Eagles Nests
Thirty active bald eagle nests have been found in Virginia so far this year. This is a decline of active nests in recent years. More sadly is the fact that in the past 10 years only about 1 out of 10 nests produced young and then rarely more than one per nesi. DDT is generally accepted as the villain. The pesticide apparently causes the eggs to have thin shells which break or fail to protect the developing embryo.
Boat Fee The correct fee for registering a motor boat is now $8.00 even though some of the old forms still show $5.00.
