England’s example
“RAPPAHANNOCK OFFICIALS are the ones who should have gone on that trip,” someone said to us, in regard to the trip to England by Supervisors from Fauquier and Loudoun counties. “Rappahannock still has £ chance.”
We’re inclined to agree. In Loudoun, especially, much of the damage of inadequately regulated urban sprawl — or “spillover,” as the English :a planners call it — has already been done. In Fauquier to some extent, and in Rappahannock to a great extent, this damage can be nipped in the bud.- Because Rappahannock is in such an advantageous position, it might well have been highly useful for the county’s officials to have had the benefit of a first-hand briefing on the British planning experience.
TO NOTE THAT THERE are differences between the countries is to belabor the obvious, and just as obviously, not all of the legislative and legal trappings of British planting can be imported to this country. But something that struck the Fauquier and Loudoun officials so forcefully were the similarities, not the differences. The British have the same problems of automobile congestion, housing pressures, highway construction, powerline construction, air pollution, waste disposal — everything we’re worried about, too.
