Heroin study backed
REP. J. KENNETH ROBINSON has joined in Congressional sponsorship of legislation to mount an intensified research effort to find an antidote for heroin addiction.
“Heroin is at the core of the drug problem, because it produces an addiction most difficult to bfeak, is destroying the potentials of thousands of young lives, and contributes heavily to rising crime rates as addicts are driven to daily robbery and theft to support the habit,” the 7th District Congressman commented in a statement.
“It is essential that we marshal government and private research capability to seek a safe and effective cure and preventive of heroin addiction,” he said.
BY TERMS OF THE BILL, which has bipartisan backing, the National Institute of Mental Health would be authorized to contract with qualified public or private research institutions and laboratories for studies of promising chemical agents, or other techniques, to counteract the physical an<f psychological effects of heroin, which is an opium derivative.
