Runners narrowly lose
THE RAPPAHANNOCK County High School cross country team suffered its first defeat of the season at the hands of a fine Warren County squad on Tuesday, October 10. The score was a close 27-28 with Rappahannock taking the first two places by a large margin.
Charles Thomas was clearly the class of the field again. His edge was 36 seconds over sophomore Bill Taylor who was in turn 35 seconds in front of highly touted Eric Frye. Frye led the Warren Wildcats to a run away victory over Culpeper earlier this year.
The other official runners for Rappahannock finished as follows: Tom Taylor, 7th; John Summers, 8th; Ronnie Nicholson, 10th; BobbyTitchenell, 11th and Andy Nichols, 19th.
Rappahannock also fielded an unofficial group of runners who were too young to be official varsity athletes. Young Jerry Thomas showed fine potential by finishing in the top 10. If he had been old enough to be official, he would have won the match for the Panthers, but there is always next year. In fact there is a next time this Saturday at RMA.
Tuesday’s match was run over the new course at the local elementary school at a distance of 2.31 miles. Charles Thomas set a new record of 11:40 for this distance. □
