“So I’m going to oppose any increase.”
Supervisor J. R. Latham said “the people who called me were in favor of keeping the warden to handle the problem.”
“The way I see it,” said Supervisor Herbert Foster, “if we continue to charge a tax on dogs, and sheep are assessed at $20 apiece for taxes, then I think we’re liable to pay claims.”
“If you have no dog tax fund you have no liability,” George Davis commented. “And another way to look at it is, the dog fund has brought in a lot of sheep assessments that you wouldn’t have gotten otherwise.”
Clerk E. M. Jones noted that “there’s not much sheep in -the county any more.”
Keim spoke up again from the audience: “But it’s the principle. My question is why do we do it?”
“Can we charge a dog tax and not pay claims?” asked Latham.
“I don’t think so,” said Foster.
“That’s the purpose of it,” said H. B. Wood Jr.
Foster wanted some more details on the procedure mentioned by Miller, about having a claim verified by two “disinterested persons.”
