The overall county apple picture looks good at this time for a reasonable crop. Red delicious were hit hard in some areas but if every living blossom is pollinated and hangs in there, we should have a high quality crop of big beautiful apples.
FRUIT' GROWERS, especially those in Rappahannock and Northern Madison, are a special breed. I never have figured out whether they are of a superior more intelligent stain or just the reverse. If they make it through the spring freeze, the summer hail and wind storms, avoid a serious drought, control insects and diseases; and then find the labor to do the picking, they have a bumper crop. If everybody has a bumper crop fruit prices drop so low it hardly pays to pick them.
I often think of Cecil Coppedge's comment, when we were trying to organize a group of Rappahannock and Madison orchadists. He said: "Rap, you have known some of us for a long time. You know we are an independent, hard headed lot that would rather go down below one by one than go to Heaven in a group.”
