THE 593 Virginia traffic deaths so far reported for the first half of 1973 show an increase of eleven when compared with those for the same period of 1972, says Colonel H.W. Burgess, Superintendent of State Police.
Noting that traffic volumes for the period were up about seven percent, Colonel Burgess said that the 1973 statistic is subject to slight upward revision due to late reports and deaths of persons now carried as injured.
He observed that good reductions were obtained in the earlier months of the year and as late as May 12 deaths were 38 below the comparable 1972 total. However, a record breaking May toll of 117 and the 123 June deaths, which marked the second highest toll for the month, wiped out the gains.
