University of Virginia Law School in 1939 and was admitted to the bar the same year. He practiced law in Farmville from 1940 until 1955 except for five years of military service during World War II.

He served as Commonwealth’s Attorney of Cumberland County from 1946 to ‘52. For ten years prior to coming to Fauquier he was a member of the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the U.S. in New York.
