In your editorial of last week you referred to the Governor of Virginia as a “never tiring champion of ‘progress’—read development — and of more and more ‘industry.’” Youthen went on to state that Virginia’s agri-business economy “isn’t good enough for a sometime corporation lawyer who has sat in the highest councils of commerce and industry.” As I see it, your accusation is without foundation.
One of the strongest arguments against your assertion appeared, on the same day your editorial was published, in an article on the front page of The Richmond Times - Dispatch. It was there reported that Governor Godwin, after giving careful consideration to the pros and cons of constructing a controversial prison facility in the historic Green Springs area of Louisa County, had decided to direct state authorities to select another site for the facility in an area where its environmental impact would be less severe.
This action on the part of the Governor indicates that he possesses an appreciation for the “current way of life in Virginia” that you lauded in an otherwise effective manner in your editorial.
