Mr. Harris, a frequent critic of Vepco, has issued another of his erroneous and misleading “letters” to the editor. It is so laden with distortions that time does not permit, and your space is too valuable, to go through it point by point.
He states that Vepco directors receive $1,000 a week. The statement is so ridiculous on the face of it that it should have been checked before printing. Vepco directors receive $3,000 a year, plus $200 for each directors meeting, held monthly. So far as officers’ salaries are concerned, they are average for the utility industry, and far less than compensation received by executives of other firms responsible for $3 billion in assets and who are subject to far less harassment in carrying out their duties.
Another comment. It would be far easier for Vepco management to say the devil with it and stop the building program scheduled to supply the Virginia economy and residents with power in the future. The Company, however, must by law be prepared to provide its customers with as much power as is wanted, at any time, anywhere.
