OVER THE years, the landowners of Rappahannock County have planted many hundreds of acres to trees but during this same time period many thousands of acres were harvested. Most of these cutover acres were not planted back to trees or prepared for natural regeneration.
For example, in .1973, 3,700, 000 board feet of sa^rtimber was harvested from the forest land in Rappahannock County. This volume represents the harvesting of some 925 acres; during that same year only 177,560 seedlings were planted. This was only enough seedlings to plant 222 acres.
THERE is a considerable difference between the 925 acres harvested and the 222 acres that were planted. Most of the planting was done on abandoned farmland; only a very small portion of these trees were planted in cutover woodland.
