“Why couldn’t we approve this one with a proviso that we won’t approve any more?” Baumgardner asked.
Masterson, Stokes, Barksdale and Davis just shook their heads. A precedent is just that, they said. “How’d you stop from doing the same thing at Massie’s Corner?” Barksdale wanted to know.
“Exceptions are the only way we’ll let the little man live, the ordinances are so tight,” J. R. Latham said. “We’ve made exceptions in the past. This is just one case. There’ll be another.”
Baumgardner addressed Supervisor Latham. “You don’t want a rezoning of the whole area?” he asked. “I wouldn’t suggest it,” Latham answered. “We make exceptions for people with 25 acres all the time,” he added.
George Davis reminded everybody that exceptions can only be made for “undue hardship” and “peculiar topography.”
EILEEN DAY asked “what is the width of the road? You’ve used that before to deny requests. Or will the Highway Department be called in on every application?”
Pete Luke made a motion to rezone Poe’s tract to residentialbusiness.
