There was no second to Luke’s motion, so the planners didn’t vote. “I suggest we start looking toward steps to rezone Amissville area,” Luke said. “That’s up to Amissville,” A.Y. Stokes said. “But that leaves him (Poe, presumably) at the mercy of the public and not elected officials,” Luke said.

“What you do will be illegal unless you amend the whole ordinance, across the county,” Davis said.

“Then all these exceptions are illegal,” J.R. Latham said. “I daresay some of them have been,” Davis agreed.

“I just don’t want to leave Miss Poe with the impression that nothing can be done,” Luke said.

“Nobody voted. She has plenty of recourse,” Masterson said.

BAUMGARDNER said he could request two houses on the same lot or a duplex. Both of these requests would have to go before the Board of Zoning Appeals.

Looking at another matter, the planners considered Beaufort Edwards’s request to continue to live in his old house while he is building another on the same lot. “You want to comment on this?” Herbert Barksdale said to Latham.

“Doesn’t look like I carry much weight,” Latham said. The Planning Commissioners decided the request doesn’t require any action on their part. It could be handled by the zoning administrator. □
