ALL DAY, Saturday, September 20, The Country Store of Washington, Va. will have a demonstration of the ancient crafts of spinning, dyeing and weaving. Annie Kelley is renowned for her natural dyed wool. She uses some common plants—such as goldenrod, walnut hulls and orchard grass—to make her dyes.
She will demonstrate just how to utilize these plants in the dyeing process. She is even bringing her little lamb, Willie, and will reveal the entire process of creating her wool, from shearing the sheep to the finished product.
Annie will have her own mordants and dyes for sale as well as some drop spindles and raw fleece for persons to try their own hand at dyeing and spinning. Her skeins of wool will be available in a wide variety of colors. A high point of the demonstration will be her indigo dye pot, which is something special as the chemical changes occur in the air, not in the pot. If persons bring raw wool, she will dye it with this special color.
