AS READERS of the News know, we took Mr. Ashworth’s advice even before he said it. Week in and week out, the News has emphasized what we agree is overwhelmingly the most important issue of our time and place—saving this beautiful and productive and vital part of Virginia from the relentless urbanization, suburbanization that has already spoiled so much of the countryside. Developers and speculators, highway engineers and sewer construction firms, and the people who feed on these enterprises, call this being “negative.” Obviously, the News doesn’t agree.
IT’S because we believe so strongly in this positive effort that we do not hesitate to criticize actions which strike us as being destructively negative.
And call it semantic sophistry if you will, we insist that anything which contains promise of enhancing and enriching the magnificent agricultural heritage that belongs to the Northern Piedmont is something which is positive. Being against the heedless bulldozer attitude that has swept away a large portion of what was once beautiful and gracious to the east of us, is not being negative, and you’ll never convince us it is.D
