But guess what? Engelman testified at an NRC hearing that he just didn’t remember being told about the fault. And Vepco officials took the stand to say—you guessed it— that Engleman didn’t say a word about Funkhouser’s discovery to anyone at Vepco.
The NRC found that Vepco had made no less than 12 “material false statements’’ about the geologic fault, and fined the utility $60,000. The utility fine was assessed by the NRC’s Atomic Safety and Licensing Board, and was the strongest ever imposed on the nuclear power industry. Only nine civil penalties have ever been imposed against power companies by the regulatory agency, and Vepco has the very dubious distinction of earning three of the nine.
