Godwin, it will be recalled, in advance of SCC hearings on Vepco’s application for new rate hikes, went all out in volunteering his feelings that Vepco sure needed those rate increases.
Vepco also was listed as a client by the law firm of State Sen. George S. Aldhizer II (Dem-Rockingham), chairman of the Commerce and Labor Committee which last year approved House Bill 664, the notorious measure that stripped from local communities their former right to act on powerline applications.
That measure was strongly supported by Vepco and—incrediblydrafted by the State Corporation Commission itself to undercut local autonomy. Senator Aldhizer has explained, in a letter to me, that he opposed the bill personally, knowing local counties would be against it if they knew about it.
