A worthy example
WE DON’T KNOW who’s responsible—whether it was Chairman Pete Luke, or Acting Executive Director John W. Jones, or whoever—but Planning District 9 has sent out a memorandum to the “media” which should set an example worthy of emulation by all bureaucracies at all levels.
The memo imparted the following information: “The Rappahannock -Rapidan Planning District Commission will not hold a September meeting primarily because there is no business that can’t wait until October.”
What a splendid decision! Lesser public officials would have gone ahead and held a meeting, anyway; not many we’ve met would be willing to admit that the affairs under their supervision are of such a nature that things could be put off for another month without any harm done.
As a matter of fact—and we don’t necessarily have Planning District 9 in mind, although this newspaper’s jaundiced view is well known where increasing “regionalism” and the related growth in bureaucratic ranks is involved--the fact is that many councils, boards, bureaus, commissions, and so on, could undoubtedly be eliminated altogether.
Chances are that a lot of citizens wouldn’t even notice, until it became apparent that their taxes were going down, thanks to reduced budget requests for all those ranks of bureaucrats who no longer existed. □
