RAPPAHANNOCK may take another step towards solving the county’s trash problem this month. On October 14 at 9 a.m., the Board of Zoning Appeals is scheduled to hear a request for a special use permit to operate a landfill outside of Sperryville on Route 522.
Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Updike’s Community Trash was awarded the county trash contract at the August meeting of the Rappahannock Supervisors. The following week, the Updikes were underbid for the Orange County trash contract and subsequently, the Orange Supervisors voted to close their landfill to Rappahannock in 90 days.
In an attempt to find a solution to the trash disposal problem and not default on their Rappahannock contract, the Updikes located a landowner willing to sell them a piece of property to use as a landfill. Located on Route 522 between Culpeper and Sperryville, the 36.92-acre site is in agricultural district, making it necessary for the Upidikes to
