from the working area. “If it can be compacted and kept away from water, solid waste decomposes so slowly that it causes no problem, no degradation to the environment,” noted Foreman.
“Soils that are usually optimal for agricultural use—prime ag soils—are also optimal for landfill use,” Foreman said. Red soil indicates plenty of oxygen and air movement and is particularly desirable for a landfill site. “The redder the better,” commented Foreman. Yellow, blue or mottled soil is a sign that the ground is poorly drained and usually indicates that the water table has been reached.
“The best soils are usually precluded from landfill use because of citizen complaints,” maintained Foreman. But landfill operation is so regulated that when it is handled properly, there really should be no complaints. “I honestly would not mind if one was put in my own backyard,” said Foreman.
