FEEDER CALF AND YEARLING SALES—Feeder cattle prices in most area state graded sales during the last half of September ran 3 to 4 cents a pound under last year. 2471 head of steer calves, average weight 507 pounds, sold for an average of $36.94 per C.W.T.,-^ 1761 head of heifer calves, average weight 464 pounds, averaged $26 50 2578 yearling steers, average weight 723, averaged $35.89 and 1460 head of yearling heifers, average weight 602 pounds, averaged $28.12

Blackleg—Vaccinating calves for blackleg and malignant edema is standard operating procedure on most cattle farms. However, we sometimes become lax and drift along for a couple of years without vaccinating with no problems. Then, bang. One morning you go out to check your cattle and there are two or three of your best yearlings laying stiff legged and bloated in the field. There have been several death losses from blackleg in the county in the past two weeks. Blackleg occurs in cattle from six months to three years of age, but the highest incidence is in young stock ranging from weaning age to two years. When vaccinating for blackleg and malignant edema be sure to follow the directions on the label regarding storage. Vaccinating with old vaccine or vaccine that has been exposed to heat and air is often just a waste of time. Boar Sale—The number of feeder pig producers in the county consigning to state graded sales had trippled within the past two years. About half of these producers are being penalized in prices received because too many of their pigs are grading below U.S. No. 1 and 2. The only way to correct this situation is to buy higher quality, better performing breeding stock. The Virginia Purebred Swine Breeders Association is sponsoring a boar and gilt sale Wednesday, October 13, 7 p.m., at the Madison Livestock Market, Madison Mills. There will be three bred sows, 17 open gilts and 21 boars offered for sale. Field Day at The Middleburg Forage Research Station, October 14, 1:30 p.m.—You are invited to join us in a tour of the Forage Research Station and observe the results of the forage and pasture research plots. This will be an ideal time to see the different forage systems and how the cows and calves have responded to them.
