ONLY a handful of people attended the November 10 special meeting of the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection to hear plans for the future of the Rappahannock Ski area that include a summer operation featuring an “alpine sled” and condominium type development on top of the ski area’s mountain.
James A. Moore, president of the Rappahannock Ski Corporation, was the featured speaker. Moore began his talk with a history of the enterprise.
Camelback Ski Corporation in Pennsylvania decided to expandits operation after a number of successful seasons, and picked the Harris Hollow site in Rappahannock for the venture, said Moore. From the beginning the company realized that expansion of the existing facilities was necessary to show the desired Rijofit. Initial plans included running^ the ski area as it was for the first year and losing money, and breaking even the second year. Expansion work was to begin during the second summer on “the best beginner slope south of Vermont.”
The company also planned to turn the ski area into a year-round venture, he said. “With only a 65 to 80 day ski expectancy, we needed reasonable summer off-season activities,” said Moore. In addition, plans had included some sort of use, unspecified, for the 150acre plateau at the mountain’s top.
