This summer, Moore said he discovered the “alpine sled” and with it, a chance to make the year-round operation a moneymaking business. The alpine sled, as Moore described it, is a little bit like a bobsled except that it’s a summer vehicle. The waxed alpine slide has low and high banks aroundcurves and the sled’s speed can be controlled by the passenger.
The sleds have been in existence in Switzerland and West Germany for five or six years and four have been started in the United States, where they have proved “terribly popular.’’Moore visited the site of one of these operations in Massachusetts. “They had a 30-minute lift line at the darn thing in August.” With an attraction like the sled, the ski area wouldn’t have to take the $400,000 loss from closing during the summer season, Moore maintained.
