Chairman E. N. Montague said the Board would watch the cafeteria for the next few weeks to see if some way could be found to improve conditions.
Beverly Massie questioned the necessity of having a physical education aide to replace the current resigning aide at the elementary school. “We’re on the line and have to be held accountable. We need to be shown the position is warranted before it’s refilled.” The aide was initially hired to relieve the classroom teachers from accompanying the physical education instructor, maintained Mrs. Massie. The teachers were to use the free time for a planning period. If a classroom teacher still has to help with phys ed and the aide is only doing paper work, then possibly the position is not warranted, Mrs. Massie claimed.
The physical education teacher can only handle so many children without getting a deficiency from the state that would reflect on the school’s accreditation, noted Superintendent Norton. He added that the present aide was retiring because she didn’t feel, at her age, that she could handle the physical exertion required for the job.
THE decision to hire an aide was made to avoid getting a deficiency marked against the school and “for other reasons that I’m not willing to discuss in open session,” interjected Fleetwood.
Mrs. Massie suggested that the problem could be solved by scheduling alterations—scheduling library or music for the class when the teacher has to accompany the phys ed instructor.
Fleetwood replied that that solution had been tried the previous year with “varying degrees of participation.. .with unsatisfactory results.”
Montague thanked Mrs. Massie for her interest in the situation and suggested that a discussion with Fleetwood could answer her questions. Superintendent Norton » added that Mrs. Massie would have a better understanding of the scheduling difficulties the administration faced in trying to keep the phys ed class size within state standards if she saw the assignment sheets.
The Board gave unanimous approval for the temporary hiring of a physical education aide pending a study of class assignments.
