Horses arrive
at Hong Kong's
Olympic venue
After a half-day journey from Amsterdam, the first batch of 27 horses arrived July 26 at the Sha Tin racecourse in Hong Kong in preparation for the Olympic Equestrian Games that begin Aug. 9.
A record number of horses will participate in the Olympic equestrian events in Hong Kong, with about 229 horses from some 40 countries.
The horses came from Belgium, Denmark.. Korea, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Canada and Germany. American horses ship later this week.
“I am so pleased with the reports of our veterinarian staff when I visited the stables that all [horses I had traveled well,'’ said Lam Woon Kwong, who is in charge of the equestrian events. “Our experience from last year’s trials has been useful as we are prepared for all conditions...periods of heat or wet weather conditions.”
“The accompanying grooms have told us that [the horses! behaved well during the 11-hour flight from Amsterdam." said attending veterinarian Dr. Christopher Riggs. “1 am sure that all horses will etyoy a good roll in the shavings, and have a small feed or light exercise before settling in.”
The U.S. three-day event team horses ship from London’s Stansted Airport Wednesday direct to Hong Kong; the dressage team horses also ship Wednesday, direct from Aachen. Germany. Show jumpers ship Aug. 5 from Aachen.
