nere is a movement in aappanannock to buy fresh. buy local and have a community food system. One of its proponents is Kenner Love. Rappahannock's agent with the Virginia Cooperative Extension office. He says a community food system would include farmers' markets, community and school gardens, community supported agriculture farms, U pick operations and roadside farm stands, community kitchens, small scale food processors and decentralized storage facilities.

Some of these items already are in place in Rappahannock, including a school program teaching students how to farm and grow vegetables which eventually wind up on lunch and dinner rabies.

There is also a movement in Rappahannock by the Virginia Organic Producers and Consumers Association to encourage more people to farm the land. This is a result of consumer demand for more food to come from local farming communities.

When you visit our section on farms, orchards and nurseries you will see some JO listings, including nine orchards, three nurseries and over a dozen farms that raise everything from dairy goats to llamas.

There's even a farm that raises beautiful white doves for spectacular releases at such events as weddings, graduations and funerals.

One of the nursertes is said to be the East Coast's premiere source of Japanese maples.

Visitors and residents alike can enjoy locally grown foods in any of our restaurants, ranging from a cozy family-style restaurant to the world renown Inn at Little Washington.

Rappahannock County is a treasure located 67 miles west ot Washington. D.C. Many of its residents belong to organizations with a common goal - keep Rappahannock open and green. We salute those who have this vision, who strive to keep Rappahannock's rich heritage, its beauty and its bounty.
