What's good for The Inn at Little Washington is good for the town of Washington. It keeps it going. The inn brings in more revenue to pay town bills than any other business and attracts tourists to the county and its offerings. We benefit from the inn's presence, now, in another way. The latest validation of the Inn at Little Washington, as if it needed any more, came this week when it was announced that the inn is the best place to eat in the world. Travel + Leisure magazine readers voted it the top hotel restaurant in the world. And the “Top Dish” in the world is the inn’s Virginia ham and Parmesan cheese dish. For Chef Patrick O’Connell the award may have a special significance because it came at a time when he was flying solo, after his longtime business partner, Reinhardt Lynch, and he parted ways. There had been speculation among some would-be dinner guests about whether the inn would be as good as before. Travel + Leisure magazine and the readers who took its survey answered that question to anyone who didn’t already know how good it was. Those in the hospitality and restaurant business know the demands of trying to not only live up to, but exceed, guest expectations. When a restaurant already is considered one of the best it is even harder to stay on top. Guests are expecting perfection and when there is even a slight mishap, it is magnified for more than it is. For the elated team of chefs, the wait staff and other inn employees, this award is bound to make each of them proud and rightly so. For O’Connell it is a chef's dream come true. For us we can bask in the inn’s achievement and feel proud, too, that our neighbor has attained this honor.
