Rappahannock County received six bids from interested contractors ranging from about $550,000 to nearly $1.1 million on the proposed project to restore imd renovate the old Scrabble School in Woodville to serve as the county's Senior Center and African-American heritage site.
County administrator John McCarthy disclosed the' bids which were opened Monday following a second round of bidding on the county project. The initial request for proposals in June failed to attract any bids -apparently not due to lack of interest in the' project but rather due to hick of time to comply with complex government -bidding requirements before the' initial July 3 deadline.
All of the bids came in higher than the $440,000 initially budgeted for the' project, but McCarthy said that estimate was IS months old and hi' expected bids to run higln'r. so he had earmarked .mother $50,000 from the county's general-fund surplus for the project. That would leave an unfunded “gap" of about $60,000 between the earmarked $490,000 and the low bid of about $550,000. which McCarthy hopi>s to narrow bv working with thi' architect and contractor to cut some costs.
