On the ball
Fall sports always seem to have the air of festivals or county fairs, and the events are even more exciting when the home teams are actually pretty good. Both the varsity volleyball and football teams began their seasons with poise, confidence and early victories this past week. Coach Bob Czekaj has put together a solid football team even given the handicap of fewer numbers than last year and the double duly that many of the players are called upon to perform. And perform they did on Saturday against a team that was bigger and every bit as good — except for the fact they had their own difficulties and did not have a kicking game. Nonetheless, the game was enjoyable to watch. It was a match between two competent teams. It was a shame that Clear Spring had to play with such a disadvantage, but otherwise there were exciting plays from both teams. likewise, the girls’ varsity Panther volleyball team was clearly well prepared and coached by Scott Wilde. They got off to a great start with a walloping victory against Eastern View, and rallied against a tough Warren County for two early season victories. The Lady Panthers are obviously in-sync - there are five returning members from last season - and they splayed with few mistakes, and looked like a team playing jwell into the season. _ .:.v> It was fun to watch BtAh'grodps of young mas and young women play together with skill and coordination. They looked like a football team. They looked like a volleyball team. They are a pleasure to watch, and we’re hopeful they will continue to get better as the season progresses. Last week’s crowds were enthusiastic and supportive — a few spectators lending their own colorful commentary regarding the other team’s skill - but overall the atmosphere was almost collegiate. The boosters were selling hamburgers and hot dogs, the band was excellent and performed very well at file half, and everyone seemed to be having a good time. Congratulations to the Panthers for a great start.
