Why collect and preserve modern-day work?
“Much of it is on videotape,* Mashon said. “Videotape deteriorates with time. Nothing surpasses preserving on 35-millimeter film.*
Deterioration is not a problem in the recording division of the campus. Much of the collection has extraordinary durability. The problem is playing material recorded before the record industry standardized groove widths and playback speeds. Once those problems have been solved, it is an easier step to make digital copies.
The facility is seeking unpublished collections. It doesn't want a recording of Gene Autry singing Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer. But it definitely wants an unpublished interview of Autry explaining how he came to write the song.
To find that original work, audio engineers and technicians sift through the 100,000 recordings received each year.
