From the data it is dear that farms must be a large part of any effort to solve the problem That said, most farmers on their own do not have the resources necessary to fully address the problem. Society at large benefits from farms and so it is right that it help farmers address the problem. Most farmers in the Chesapeake Bay watershed will require additional assistance from government to have the resources to be able to do the right thing. Improved practices by developers, industry, municipalities and individuals must also be put into practice to improve water quality as projected population growth in the watershed will place additional pressure on the bay.
It is estimated that the population of the watershed will increase 30 percent by 2030 from a 2000 baseline. All the related additional car emissions, parking lot runoff and fertilized lawns will add pollution to the bay. The expended population will also lead to the need for more wastewater treatment facilities. Impervious cover could also increase 60 percent in the same time frame, leading to greater storm water runoff and related pollution, if current trends continue As a result, focus must be placed on pollution generated by increasing population and associated development as well as pollution coming off farms. A further point is that about half of the airborne pollution that reaches the bay comes from outside the bay’s watershed indicating that a broader region may need to be included to fully address the problem.
