One pound of dry matter in mangels has been found to be equivalent in feeding value to on' pound of dry matter in mill feeds, and a little more than one pound of dry matter in corn silage. Tests have shown that mangels may profitably replace onehalf of the grain ration under conditions where the roots can be produced for $4 per ton. In those experiments the roots were fed to dairy animals. In many sections, the silo has not yet come into general use. On such farms root crops are of double value, for they may be used to supply succulence as well as feeding value. In fact where winter dairying is practiced they become almost indispensable for best results.
