The Southside Community Hos pital Association Tuesday night began its second quarter century on a strong note of progress and a challenging call to greater serv ice in the immediate years ahead. The hospital closed 1952. its j 25th year of service, with an in crease in the service rendered in every department", as Adminis trat Dr J. S. Stubbs, reported dur ing the annual meeting. Before detailing a list of long[ improvements over the past 12 months. Mr. Stubbs capsuled the significant place of Southside Hospital in these words: "More and more of our people : are availing themselves of facili ties offered by their own h s pitai. in their own area. As more and better facilities become avail able. more and more people in Southside Virginia will be able to satisfy most of their medical needs without the expense and in convenience of traveling to other centers." Weaver Re-HUcted Association President W S Weaver, unable to be present due to illness, was re-elected to an other year of leadership in the office, as were Vernon C Wo mack. vice-president and M I Newbill. Jr., treasurer. K Arm strong Smith was elected to the office of Association secretary. President Weaver's report, read by Mr. Womack, termed the year "very successful." Noting an in crease in rates and salaries dur ing the year, he declared the h -s pital remains "in the lower brac ket in rates, but in the higher bracket of service." Pressing Needs He li.'ted three "pressing" needs at tive institution, which upped its bed capacity during the yea: from 57 to 87. as- completion of the third floor; additional serv ice personnel, and instituting of a school of nursing The membership named to the board f managers the follow ing G. F. Curtis Hubbard. Allen Pore and R. J. Martin Jr., of Farmville. They will serve three-vear terms. Among improvements listed by Administrator Stubbs were these: installation of x-rav machine pro viding m re complete diagnostic x-ray service: expansion of bed rapacity from 57 to 87. providing 15 private beds 28 semi-private and 4 5 ward beds.
