More and more jobs In fields related to agriculture are becom ing available—jobs in which a ‘■farm" background will be an outstanding asset. 000 job openings for them in fields related to agriculture. These in clude positions in teaching, re search, extension, communications, conservation, farm services, and others. Many jobs are available also for those who don't have a college education. They include work in industry, trucking, artificial breed ing, repair and servicing of farm machinery, fruit spraying, airplane dusting, and mapy other fields. The increase in off-farm employ ment opportunities has accompa nied the national decrease in num bers of farms. There are about 1.6 million fewer commercial farms today than there were 25 years ago. Farm Accidents Need Not Happen Many farm accidents could be prevented if farmers were as con cerned about good housekeeping in their barns as their wives are about the appearance of their ■ homes. When it comes to preventing accidents, good housekeeping around the barn is just as impor tant as keeping the house spick and span, advises O. 3L Hogsett, extension safety specialist at the University of Illinois College of Agriculture. Farmers should take a little time right now to clean out haz ards around the l?arn to make chores easier and safer for the rest of the winter. If alleyways or other work areas are cluttered with sacks of feed, stools, carts and other obstacles, find a safe, out-of-the-way place for them. Forks, scrapers and oth er barn-cleaning tools belong in a safe storage rack—not standing in the corner or stuck up over beams. You're using the ladder or stairs to the haymow more often now, so make sure all steps and rungs are sound and fastened wiell. If the ladder doesn’t extend well above the loft floor, build an ex tension.
