' E. W. Mundie, administrative office of the State Soil Conservation Committee advises that James E. Yates of Huntly has been certified as a candidate for election as supervisor of the Culpeper Soil Conservation District. Mr. Yates was recommended by the chairman of Ryppahannock Extension Service’s commodity committees which include: E. M. Jones, fruit committee; F. E. Compton, poultry committee; J. Rodes Brown,, livestock committee and H. S. Barksdale, agronomy committee. Mr;. Yates’s name will appear on the ballots November 6, 1951.
Frequently taxpayers' ask , "What’s the County Agent been doing?” and I’m always glad to hear of such interest in the Extension Service program here in the county and am glad to take this opportunity-to report on some recent activities. . Tuesday, September 4: Mrs. Cheatham and Mr. W. C. Camp' bell were in the office discussing details of the Angus Feeder Calf Sale. Mrs. Leon Greenaway came in with three soil samples for analysis to determine proper liming and fertilising rates. A.- C. Latham was in reporting on recent ram purchases. Also while at the office the following telephone calls were made relative to the coufity-wide heifer vaccination program against Bangsdisease: Mrs. Dot Estes, Wade H. Massie I'll, C. M. Ramey, Rodes Brown, Ray Cannon, Hilda Brown, D. Lyle Miller, Jr., Raymond Johnson, Larry Buckley, and John Wayland. Paul Zinn called for formula on spraying cattle for fly control. In addition, eleven farm visits were made in connection with the Bangs control program in Jenkins Hollow. Miles traveled: 58.
On Wednesday G. D. Kite and Denver Bragg, specialists in farm structure—and poultry husbandry of V.P.I. worked with your County Agent on two farms. C. R. Wire has had a barn and holding chute and pens built according tq Extension Service blueprints (with modifications) and in addition was concerned over recommendations for remodeling two old tenant houses for poultry; one for broiler production and the other for laying house. The three of us then journeyed to Lee West’s farm recently purchased from P. A. Hughes and advised with Mr. .West on his farmstead planning in general and specifically with putting poultry houses on C. C. Zinn’s 'place .which Mr. West plans to buy and which is adjacent to the Hughes place. Also a site was selected for a new laying house. Mr. West plans to produce a large number of turkeys and hens eggs on contract with firms in Washington. Off at noon for the usual 12:45 p.m. Wednesday broadcast at WCVA. Then to rush, back and change clothes and attend Mr. John Keyser’s funeral. Incidentally have any of you stopped to think what a tremendous influence Mr. Keyser had on the sheep industry of the county l Having maintained the oldest purebred flock in the county for years and from the number of breeders sold annually I Venture to say ,65% of the lambs and wool produced in Rappahannock was influenced by Mr. Keyser’s flock.
