It would he better to quote Mr. Pope, perhaps, and say “Be not the first by whom the new are tried, Nor yet the last to lay the old aside.” It’s a custom among southerners to use the formal terms in speaking to a friend or to an acquaintance; it’s use is one of deference, dignity, and respect rather than strict formality or lack of friendliness. . It is one of the refinements handed down to us by our forefathers and we should hang on to it—goodness knows, weNre lost most of the other good things they left us!
