Has “Green Light**
The meat animal producer has a green light to go ahead in 1952. . . but with a certain amount of caution because of likely changes in trends.
George Herring, animal husbandman at V.P.L, says a continued strong demand for meat, and good prices for livestock, are predicted for 1952.
The story for each of the past., three years has been about the same. Livestock numbers on farms have been expanded, with slaughter increasing slowly but lagging behind numbers. The stage is being set for larger suppliesof beef, veal, and lamb, and less pork. The beginning of this trend should be quite noticeable during the last part of 1952.
Cattle numbers have been rising rapidly. They reached 84,000,000 head, which is near the previous record figure, at the beginning of 1951; and are expected to reach,, 90,000,000 head at the beginning of 1952, then go higher. In the meantime slaughter of cattle and calves has decreased because of the restocking program. However, some increase in slaughter is expected in 1952 for the first time in five years.
