Top~Dresting Pastures

Top-dress for top-pastures.
That's the advice from W. W. Lewis, Extension agronomist at VPI, who says fertilisation during the dormant period from now through February will give more grazing next year.
Orchard grass-lespedeza pastures in the costal plains area should be top-dressed each winter or very early spring with 500 to 700 pounds of 4-12-8 or 4-16-8 fertilizer per acre. If the lespedeza is thin, or there is not enough left to re-seed itself, seed 10 pounds of lespedeza to the acre in February or early March.
In the Piedmont and west of the Blue Ridge, orchard grasslespedeza should be top-dressed every three or four years with 1,000 pounds per acre of 2-12-12, 0-14-7, 4-12-8 or 4-16-8.
