..■■■■■ mmmmmme ' The Anneal Field Day and Bull t Sale at the Front Koyal Beef Cat- | tie Research Center will get underway at ten o’clock the morning of Wednesday, April 9.
Cows of the three major beef breeds with their 1951 daughters and present calf crop will be on display with their respective sires nearby which will prove an inter-' eating spectacle to observe.
Last Thursday 1 visited the Research Center for the purpose of inspecting the bulls that will be offered for sale. These bulls have done much better as a group than in any previous year and have been fed on unusual ration which should arouse the thinking of all our cattlemen in Rappahannock. This ration being rather bulky in nature gives most of the young herd sires the appearance of being pinched in the heart girth more than is actually the case and actually is a well developed barrel, C due to the bulkyness of the economical ration.
According to my eye the Shorthorns are the outstanding bulls of the lot. A couple of reds, a dark roan and a white bull were especi- . ally appealing. While the Angus aren’t up to a lot we’ve seen, they are a very commendable group. There is a grandson of Highlands General 44th (chain No. 91) that is a soggy growthy type with a nice set of breeches that caught y * my eyer Also while a different type ... altogether from the bull carrying chain No. 91 there was another Angus bull of Eileenmere breeding (chain No. 90) that should do an excellent job when used on big rugged cows. Cows at the Center having suf- „ fered with Grass Tetany last year Bob Priode, in charge is feeding a mineral mixture which sounds good to me, sfhd is apparently giving results. Here ’tis: 100 lb. ground limestone, 300 lb. steamed bone meal, 100 lb. salt, one and . one-third ounces cobalt chloride, one and two-thirds pounds bluestone and 50 lb. linseed meal or cottonseed meal to make more palatable. Should the mixture be fed out; of doors sprinkle to prevent it blowing. The Cobalt Chloride should be crushed fine. , Mix all ingredients thoroughly. r ' '
