A Baptist church was organized at Thornton’s Gap during the year 1787, and a meeting house built in what, is commonly known 'as “Old Bryan Meeting House”, having been -built partly through the 'efforts of the grandfather of the late William Jennings Bryan.
The church progressed, despite ' the many handicaps which were common to those days. The" brethren were zealous in matters of doctrine and practice, some**fr**es to a fault, and differences grew up among them to the point where a division was had about the year 1»36. The apparent principal cause of the division was that of the support of missions through the “board” system. As is usual in those cases where differences occur, there was evidently more of an effort bn the part of some of those persons engaged in the dispute to widen the breach than there was to heal over and try to * reach an amicable settlement of their differences. Some of those engaged would say, were they now : living, that such a settlement was impossible. But is that true? To a considerable degree, the division followed a course along family lines, which in itself would indicate that it was not a clear-cut $ issue because of differences of belief over doctrine and practice.
