On The Brink
Collier's recently ran a long editorial, called “On the Brink of Socialism," that can be r«»ad with profit by every thinking American.
The editorial was based on a current controversy in New York State. As a result of a new treaty between this country and Canada, a large additional amount of water is now available on the Niagara River for hydroelectric development. Cost of the project Will be about $350,000,0G0. Five private utility companies, which have been serving the state excellently for many years, are ready to go ahead with the project; and to finance itentirely with private capital. But authorization for this Is being delayed by groups which want to socialize Niagara power, by having the development carried on either by New York State or the Federal government. In eitheri case, of course, the taxpayers would do the paying and the politicians woud do the spending.
Collier’s said, in part: “In the first place, this is hardly the time, when the President is asking for billions in new taxes, for his administration to propose spending the people’s money on something
at no public expense.
