A, highlight of Virginia’s racing and social calendar, Gold Cup Day annually draws thousands of spectators from throughout Virginia and neighboring states. Gold Cdp subscribers include many prominent in official and social circles in Washington, Richmond, Baltimore, and other eastern sea.board cities. * i* The Virginia Gold Cup, won last year by Mrs. Amory Carhart’s Mister Mars to give the Warrenton owner a second leg on. the prized trophy* is for five-year-olds and up and is considered one of the most conclusive tests for jumpers in the nation.
The race should be particularly exciting this year, as three owners may be contending for a third victory and permanent possession gf the Gold Cup, retired only three . times in 26 years.
Mrs. Carhart won in 1942 with Sir Romeo and plans to enter the ,« 1951 winner, Mister Mars, again this year. Others with two legs on the cup are Christopher M. Greer, Jr., of Middleburg, who won with Goldun in 1941 and Houseman in 1946, and Thomas Stokes of Philadelphia, whose Never Worry finished first in 1947 and 1949_Other
possible entries are Done Sleeping, who won the Gold Cup , in 1950 for Alvin Untermeyer, but i lost carrying George T. Weymouth’s colors in the King Haiglar Steeplechase at Camden, 8. C., March 15, to Mister Mars, and Rustling Oaks, who placed third in the King Haiglar for William G. Jones of Charlottesville.--—
Co-feature on the supporting card is the Virginia Steeplechase, offering $1,000 purse for fouryear-olds in a two-mile race over brush. The program also includes another brush race, three hurdle races and a fiat race.
