Aprfllon the newspaper office calendar this year means Uncle ’Sam if placing in effect the first of three 10 per cent increases congress authorized for mailing of second class matter.
It'll be something to circle in red on the same days for 1953 and and 1954 also, effective dates for the other two increases.
Postal card rates climbed from a penny to two cents February 1; special delivery fees from 15 to 20 cents, and July .1 third class rates on catalogs, circulars, and othqr bulk mailing of advertising matter will jump from one cent to one and a half cents per piece.
There was also an increase in fourth class rates last October 1, all the advances making for extra costs in newspaper mailing on papers mailed outside the county of publication.
The second class rates on outside county of publication mailings, effective April 1, will climb from 1.50 to 1.65 cents on reading portions of publications.
As there is no charge on newsin
the county of publication, these rates should not be a hardship on the weekly newspapers throughout the country.
