With the increase in the tax levy only 25 cents, -we can be thankful that it was no more.

The failure to give the increase of $1200 to the welfare department came when the supervisors had to learn that “he who pays the fiddler calls the tune.” When the supervisors undertook to say they’d agree to the raise if half of it twere used for old-age assistance, they failed to reckon with government regulations. The county pays a third, the state a third, and federal government a third. The county can’t do too much saying of what shall and shall not be done with the money—especially when someone else is paying two-thirds.

That’s the argument of plenty of people about this federal aid to education. When outside money comes in, you have to take outside rulings and regulations, too.

Frankly, we never saw eye to eye with all this federal money handout—anywhere except on roads. Everyone uses the roads and it’s all right to use the money from California, New York, and Texas to help Virginia roads: they all ride ’em.

It never occurred in these corners that because John D. Rockefeller had more' money that it was up to him to pay our bills. There’s no patience wasted here on folks who can’t be what they are, live within their own means, and not expect those who have to give those who haven’t. Because New York er California has moremoney to give to schools appears no reason why we in Virginia should expect them to help educate the Virginia children. When they do, we have no right to argue of they want Virginia children taught New York and California history—or any other subject they suggest: communism, socialism, or yogi—after all, if they pay for it, they should “call the tune.’’

Independence is expensive. We have all found that out.
